The escalator of success runs both ways
The struggle of 'making it' in a public career, be it sports or the arts,
is nowhere more clear and exposed than in baseball. The heirarchy of the
minor leagues, of working one's way up the ladder towards the majors, is
a slow process. And very few make it all the way.
This song resonates with me, with my own struggles as
a performer. It's one my favorite songs that Richard and I wrote for the
Bobs, but it somehow never made it onto a Bobs recording. Now it's here,
and also on a charitable compilation of baseball songs called 'Nolan Ryan,
A musical tribute'.

Out in the sunshine
My mind is goin' off
I'm starin' at the grass
I see a fly
I'm in Modesto
Down in the double A's
My hands are sweatin' now
Don't let me down
But if I make this club today
I'll never go back down, no I'll be on top to stay
I had a contract
I had a convertible
Coach said he'd look for me
On TV
They said I had promise
I had potential
They don't say nothin' now
They let me be
And if I make this club today
I'll never go back down, no I'll be on top to stay
Up in the bleachers
People are laughin' now
Looks like they're havin' fun
They're drinkin' beer
And why do you write me?
I told you I'm doin' fine
I don't have time to write
I got things to do
If I'm gonna make it
I've got to concentrate
I've been on top before
Gonna be there again
I'm gonna make this club today
I'll never go back down, no I'll be on top to stay
Out in the sunshine
My mind is goin' off
I'm starin' at the grass
I see a fly
