When the opening words to this song came to me - "Old Mr. Mackle Hackle Had a Hen that Wouldn't Cackle" - they seemed too silly. It was with some embarrassment that I shared the words with my songwriting partners. "Just Silly Enough!" was their response, and they encouraged me to take it further, and helped write some of my favorite lines, including "Jokes that make her yuk and yak'll help your chicken find her missing cackle." Isn't that just a sublime rhyme for cackle?!
